We Need Your Help

The Seaford Historical Society does it by volunteers. Unlike other organizations, we do everything from installing our own security system to writing our own exhibit signs. Our members are our docents, exhibit builders, train model builders, fine artists, gift store buyers, Civil War re-enactors, barbecue chefs, historians, newspaper reporters, parade float builders, grounds keepers, carpenters, bridge builders, wallpaper installers, fiber optic lighting specialists, electricians, party planners, bus tour guides, computer database input workers, light bulb changers, historic clothing seamstresses, Victorian cake bakers, and the list goes on and on. Our members make all the difference.

We can always use your help, your talents, your encouragement and your financial support. But sometimes we are looking for a very specific skill and we don’t know where to find it. Sometimes we are searching for a specific artifact. Here is what is happening now.

But please note – we need you. Whatever you do, whatever your skill, whatever you find fun… join us. See membership on the side bar. The more, the merrier.

Colonial Trencher

Can you work in wood? Do you think you could make an elongated, crude bowl from a small log just as Seafordians did in the 1700's? Or maybe you know a source for a replica. We have the Colonial flatware, just as would have been used by a Blue Hen in George Washington's army. But we would like to have the bowl too. Please call the museum at (302) 628-2984. Thanks.

Docents Needed

Many hands make light work and also add to the fun we have when we volunteer at the museum or the plantation. Please, come join our docent program. Help visitors tour the museum and learn about Delaware history. Lead tourists through our beautiful plantation and explain what life was like in the 1850's. It is easy to become a docent. All you have to do is have a love for local history. You will be giving your valuable time to a worthy cause. And you will learn interesting things. Just give the museum a call and talk to Sharlana Edgell, (302) 628-9828. Or call after hours and leave a message on the voice mail. We will get back to you. Our volunteers make a big difference in Seaford.

Outhouse Needs Help

Do you understand house repair and maintenance? Are you handy with a hammer? Do you feel like restoring a Victorian house is too big of a job, but it always seemed like it would be a fun challenge? No bathroom was part of life that is curious for the children who visit the Ross Plantation. When there was no such thing as a toilet, what did you do? We would get questions like that all the time. Finally, Keith Short generously found a Victorian building we were missing and the all-important outhouse. But outhouses haven't been used for some time and this one is a very, very, very old outhouse. It matches the period of the 1800's. It is sound and has a good structure. But it is not in restored condition. We need someone to make this miniature "house" like new again. Think of the importance of this job. No mansion is complete without an official outhouse. However, the building we were so generously donated needs some help. Maybe you are the perfect volunteer for this necessity of life.
