William J. Fisher was born December 28, 1843. He was born on the Coverdale family farm, once considered part of West Fork Hundred, but now it is considered part of Seaford Hundred. Little is known about his early life, however.

What is known is that his father was Isaac M. Fisher and his mother was Sarah Jane Vaughan. The family lived on land granted to George Fisher by the Lord Baron of Baltimore on July 30, 1732. It consisted of 100 acres and was named Fisher’s Fancy. Some people referred to it as Nanticoke Farm or Fisher Fancy Farm. George Fisher built the home and it was passed down to his son James, who later passed it down to Isaac, his son. Isaac was the father of William James Fisher, who had eight siblings. The siblings were:

  • Mary Frances born March 8, 1846,
  • Alice Annie born January 3, 1849,
  • George Rogers born February 20, 1851
  • Isaac Montgomery born February 3 ,1854
  • Jacob born April 5, 1856
  • Anna Bathshieba born June 14 , 1857
  • Elizia Emily born October 5, 1860
  • Robert Welles born October 10, 1863
