- William Henry Harrison Ross, Caleb’s father, was a wealthy politician and a farmer who, in 1851, became Delaware’s youngest governor at age 36. As of 2006, he is Delaware’s only governor from Seaford.
- The Ross Mansion, pictured above, is owned by the Seaford Historical Society and is open to visitors Thursday through Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., except holidays.
- Governor Ross was best known for his love of horse racing, showing horses, and bringing the railroad down from Dover to Seaford. He made sure the train tracks went through the middle of his farm. He established his own Ross Station near his home for economic reasons.
- Caleb’s father was the captain of a Cavalry unit and Caleb served in a Cavalry unit.
- Seaford was a Southern town in a Union State, so that means some people supported and/or joined the Northern Army (the Union) while others supported and/or served in the Army for the South (the Confederate Army).

This is the mansion where Caleb and his family lived on their plantation just north of Seaford. |
