THE HUMOR OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN-Guest Lecturer: Dr. Larry Koch
Admission is FREE! OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!
It is time we free the real Abraham Lincoln from the mythmakers! Most of us the he overcame a life of poverty, helped found the Republican Party and freed the slaves. The purpose of his presentation is to go beyond a mere list of what he did by identying many great additional accomplishments rarely acknowledged and find out who he really was.
Our goal is to discover and understand our 16th President. He was a man of contrasts-melancholy, with a strong sense of honor, as well as a canny politian. This lecture zeroes in on another key and often neglected aspect of his personality; his sense of humor.
See how Lincoln used humor to connect with audiences. Learn how he used gentle rebukes with friends and pointed sarcasm with enemies. Compare his humor with that of other occupants of the Oval Office. As a storyteller he mastered the tools of timing, word choice and imagery to become America’s greatest orator. Relive his practical jokes and while the whole presentation is chock-a-block with his jokes, enjoy his top five stories, which are still laugh-out-loud-funny today!
“The Humor of Abraham Lincoln” is presented by Dr. Larry Koch, a former classroom teacher and college instructor, historian, stand-up comic and storyteller. Dr. Koch received his doctorate from the University of Main in 1993 and is a member of the Abraham Lincoln Association, along with other history groups. In addition to a life in education, he has done stand-up, been a storyteller, a Maine guide and has other interesting pursuits.
